time.

space.

energy.

This was one of the two assignments I was asked to complete for my entrance exam at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy.

I was asked to make three big-size-drawings/paintings (size A2 or bigger). One should represent your idea/imagination of time, one representation of space and one representation of energy.

The stains, holes, patches and repairs on your jeans tell the story of a lifetime.

Each mark representing an experience, an adventure or a memory over

Space

For this one my mind went in multiple directions. I thought of outer space, personal space, empty space,...

I ended up painting something inspired by "my safe space".
Seven years ago I would've said my safe space was my bedroom. However, since then, I've moved quite a lot and had to adapt my space to those circumstances.

Space was already an abstract thing in my mind so it was difficult to represent.
When painting I tried to emulate how it felt when moving. Frantic. Messy. Scary.

Energy

For this one, I wanted to challenge myself and paint something more realistic. So far I had only done abstract works so this wasn't easy for me but i had a lot of fun doing it.

One of my favourite things to do is to go to concerts. I enjoy the shared experience that everyone has in that environment. The artist on stage shares his energy to the crowd. In my experience, it's the most tangible way of "seeing" energy. It's very powerful. That is how I interpreted Energy for this assignment.
